Married to a woman 7 years his senior, Anne Hathaway, at 18. Not much is known about his personal life, but he is famously known for his works and for creating his own words to use (called Shakespearean). Shakespeare died April 23, 1616.

Edgar Allan Poe born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809. His biological parents died when Poe was a very young child and he moved in with a foster family. He excelled academically, but did not finish schooling due to his debts (from gambling) and enlisted for the United States Army; however, he left because of financial problems. In 1836, he married his young cousin, Virginia. In October 3, 1849, Poe was in a state of semi-consciousness and died 4 days later, he was assumed to have died from rabies.

Poe established himself as a short story writer and poet, he was known for being one of the originators of the 'horror' genre and one of the first American writers to have a major role in literature.

John Steinbeck

John Steinbeck was born February 27, 1902, in Salinas, California. He attended Stanford University, but did not graduate. Steinbeck went to New York to become a free-lance writer; however, he was not successful. Steinbeck returned to California, there he wrote and published many stories. It was not until that he published Tortilla Flat (1936) that he gained recognition. The majority of Steinbeck's novels revolve around economic problems. In 1942, he divorced his first wife and then married Gwndolyn Conger, they had one child. However, Steinbeck went into depression after his friend died in a motor accident, he and his wife divorced. He remarried again in 1950. Steinbeck died in December 20, 1968.

Nelle Harper Lee born April 28, 1926, in Monroeville, Alabama to Frances Cunningham Finch Lee and Amasa Coleman Lee. She was the youngest out of four children. Lee is best known for her best-selling book, To Kill A Mockingbird, a timeless classic that talks about growing up. Lee developed an interest in English literature and focused most of her attention to it. She graduated high school in 1944 and then attended an all-female college in Montgomery. She and her long-time friend, Truman Capote, worked together on a book called In Cold Blood and researched many crimes, but a rift between the two drew them apart. Lee died in February 19, 2016, at the age of 89.

Arthur Miller born October 17, 1915, in Harlem, New York City, New York. He is an American 20th Century playwright, essayist, and figure in American theater. A modern tragedian, Miller says he looks to the Greeks for inspiration, particularly Sophocles. A small fact: Miller was married to Hollywood star, Marilyn Monroe, but the relationship was rocky. He is best known for the plays 'A View from the Bridge,' 'The Crucible' and the Pulitzer Prize-winning 'Death of a Salesman.' Miller's works earned him many honors in his career. Miller died in February 10, 2005, in Roxbury, Connecticut.

During his first U.S. tour, in 1842, Dickens designated himself as what many have deemed the first modern celebrity. He has made big contributions to classic English Literature and lectured against slavery to the American people during his tour. Dickens died June 9, 1870 of a stroke, in Higham, United Kingdom.

F. Scott Fitzgerald is known for his famous novel, The Great Gatsby. He was born on September 24, 1896 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He honed his skills as a writer at Princeton University. He first showed his promising potential as a writer with his novel 'This Side of Paradise.' But with his celebrity status, he became infamous for being a playboy and he lost his reputation as a serious literary writer. He earned his reputation back as a serious writer with his several other publications. In 1925, he released 'The Great Gatsby.' At the age of 44 in 1940, he died of a heart attack. [1]

Eric Arthur Blair who is better known by his pen name George Orwell was born on June 25, 1903 in Motihari, Bengal Presidency in British India. He moved to London and wrote his first publications in English by exploring the poorer parts of London. He got his inspiration from Jack London. In 1933, he published his first book 'Down and Out in Paris and London.' [2] In April 1944, he was ready to publish "Animal Farm" however it was first rejected since it was viewed as an attack on the Soviet regime which was their crucial ally in the war at the time. [3] 'Animal Farm' finally got published in print in 1945 and met a worldwide success. He continued writing journalistic works and wrote 'Nineteen Eighty-four.' Orwell died at the age of 46 in 1950. William Golding was born on September 19, 1911 in Newquay, Cornwall, England. His first novel 'The Lord of the Flies' became a global phenomenon. He was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983. [5] He lived a long life and died at the age of 81 in 1993.

Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835. The public began noticing his work in 1865 when his story 'The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calavaras County' appeared in the New York Saturday Press. [6] He gained even more fame when published his first book 'The Innocents Abroad' in 1869. [6] He continued writing and in 1876, he published 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.' In 1885, he then published 'The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.' Twain passed died on April 21, 1910 but his legacy continues on to this day.

Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. [7] Doyle began writing in 1886 and his publication, 'A Study in Scarlet' catapulted him to fame. This publication introduced the immortal Sherlock Holmes. Doyle then published 'Sherlock Holmes' which made Doyle world famous. Doyle passed away on July 7, 1930.

Lewis Carroll, real name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was born January 27, 1832, in Daresbury, United Kingdom. Carroll had a great relationship with children and he loved to entertain children. Carroll wrote 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' based on the requests of young Alice Liddell, the one who undoubtedly inspired the novel's protagonist and it was published in 1865. After the success of the book 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,' he proceeded to make a sequel for it, continuing the chronicles of Alice called 'Through the Looking-Glass' (1871). Carroll died January 14, 1898 on his 66th birthday, where he caught a flu which led to pneumonia, in Guildford, United Kingdom.

Geoffrey Chaucer born c. 1343, London, United Kingdom was known as the Father of English literature and greatest poet in the Middle Ages. The exact dates of when Chaucer published his written works are not certain. Chaucer is believed to have written the poem 'Troilus and Criseyde' sometime in the mid-1380s and 'The Canterbury Tales' between 1387–1400. His work 'The Canterbury Tales' only consisted of 24 tales, while Chaucer wanted it to be 120 tales, but the book abruptly ends, with the character not yet to have even reached Canterbury. Chaucer died in October 25, 1400, London, United Kingdom.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born January 3, 1892, Bloemfontein, South Africa who was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor. Tolkien is best known for his popular classic fantasy novels The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, in which he created a fully detailed history of the world of Middle-Earth and even a fictional language. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings gained a large fan base and have been adapted to films, which also went on to become award-winning blockbuster films. A British novelist, screenwriter, and film producer, Rowling is notable for being the author of the Harry Potter series and film franchises. Roald Dahl is an author who is famous for his evergreen children's books. Roald Dahl was born on September 13, 1916 in Llandaff, Wales. [11] He wrote stories some of which are recounted from his own memorable events throughout his life. He began his burst of literary publications in 1961 with 'James and the Giant Peach.' He then published 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.' 'Matilda' was published in 1988. Roald experienced enormous success on television. He died on November 23, 1990, at the age of 74.

Stephen Edwin King was born in September 21, 1947 in Portland Maine. King's first professional short story was named 'The Glass Floor.' Startling Mystery Stories bought King's short story in 1967. [8] Throughout his early years of marriage, he continued writing short stories. He pushed 'Carrie' in the spring of 1974 and wrote 'The Shining' in Colorado after a little less than a year of publishing 'Carrie.' Noel Carroll claims King's work as an ideal of modern horror fiction in Carroll's book 'The Philosophy of Horror.' [9]

Richard Wright, a pioneering African-American writer, who was born on September 4, 1908 in Roxie, Mississippi. He published his first short story when he was 16 years of age in a Southern African-American newspaper. Wright went through poverty, but he continued to write and in 1938, Wright published 'Uncle Tom's Children.' 'Uncle Tom's Children' made a significant turning point in Wright's life. The book brought him fame and he was able to continue writing. Wright passed away because of a heart attack on November 28, 1960 but his works remain exemplary. [10]

Maya Angelou was born on April 4, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri. Civil rights activist and writer, Maya Angelou is known for her 1969 memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Angelou also famous for her recitation of one of her famous works, On The Pulse of Morning, in the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1993. Angelou received several honors in her career.
